Causes of Hair Loss

Androgenic alopecia or Male pattern baldness is the most common of the hair loss types in men. One out of every two men who are above the age of 50 can be affected by male pattern baldness. The main causes of male pattern baldness are:

  • Genetics
  • Certain types of cancers
  • Thyroid Conditions
  • Anabolic Steroids
  • Certain medications

Hair loss might start right in the teenage years and increase as you age. You are at a higher risk if any of the relatives on your maternal side have male pattern baldness.

Symptoms of Hair loss:

Baldness is associated with symptoms such as redness, rash, peeling of scalp, pain, patchy hair loss or hair breakage. Hair loss begins at temples or the crown of your head. However, there are men who get a single bald spot on their head. There are a few who experience receding hairline that takes the shape of an “M.” Then there are others who experience continuous decline in their hairline until they are completely bald.

Diagnosis of Male Pattern Baldness:

It is better to get your condition diagnosed before going in for any treatment. Nutritional disorders and fungal conditions of the scalp need to be ruled out before getting treated for hair loss. Your doctor may ask you to go for a blood test or a skin biopsy to find out the exact cause for your hair loss.

Scalp Transplant Procedure:

Scalp Transplant involves extraction of hair follicles from the back of your head and transplantation of them on the balding areas of your scalp. FUT or Follicular Unit Transplantation is generally the preferred technique for scalp transplant as this is faster than the other method, which is the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). Here, a single strip of tissue is removed from the donor area and then the individual follicular units are isolated microscopically. These are then placed in the incisions created in the recipient area, in units of 1, 2, 3 and 4.

How it works

  • The scalp is anaesthetised using a local anesthetic so that you don’t feel any discomfort or pain. The hair in the donor area is trimmed to 1mm length. A single strip of tissue is removed using a precision tool. This strip is then placed in a holding solution in order to maximise its survival.
  • The individual hair follicles are isolated microscopically from the tissue. These are prepared in units of 1, 2, 3 and 4, so that they can be transplanted.
  • The donor area is then closed using absorbable sutures or staples.
  • The recipient area is prepared by creating tiny incisions
  • The follicular unit grafts are then placed into these incisions, taking special care of their arrangement and positioning, in order to achieve a natural look.

Certain instructions will be given by your surgeon that you need to follow. Not following these can lead to unwanted complications.
