This video is a talk about hair transplantation given by Dr. Renu who is working as a hair transplant surgeon and consultant dermatologist at Nu Cosmetic Clinic. According to her hair transplantation is a very common procedure today, owing to the increasing number of cases of baldness.
As per her, the most common type of hair loss in many is male pattern baldness or Androgenic alopecia. This is one condition that 50% of the men face at some or the other point in their lives. It could be genetic or due to a few hormonal changes.
“We, at Nu Cosmetic Clinic, grade our patients depending upon their type of baldness,” says Dr. Renu. “The grades start from 1 and go up to 7. At grade 7 we classify patients who are completely bald except for some amount of hair at the back of their head.”
Whenever Dr. Renu or any other hair transplant specialist at Nu Cosmetic sees a patient for hair transplant, they categorize him into one of these grades after doing a detailed analysis. They look for comorbid conditions if any. They find out if the donor area has a thick growth of hair and then they analyse whether or not a transplant would be successful. After the analysis, they decide on the type of hair transplant that is to be done.
Hair Transplant Techniques:
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation): This involves the removal of a long think strip of skin from the back of the head. This strip is then divided into individual hair follicles or grafts. The grafts are then transplanted onto the area where the patient is experiencing hair thinning or baldness. The procedure is invasive and might cause some bleeding. It might leave a linear scar as the wound in the donor area will have to be stitched up.
FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction: Here, Dr. Renu says that individual hair units are extracted using a small punch. This hardly leaves any scar and even if it does, the size of the scar will be too small for the naked eye to notice.
Apart from the two techniques mentioned above, Dr. Renu also talks about a new technique called DHT (Direct Hair Transplantation) where the hair grafts extracted will be transplanted immediately to achieve optimal results.
Can Hair Transplantation actually work for Baldness?
To this question Dr. Renu replies with a yes and says that the hair follicles found at the back of the head do not come under the influence of the hormones. Therefore, when they are transplanted to other areas the hair growth would be healthy and continuous, without any hair fall.
How it works?
- Local anaesthesia would be given to the donor area and recipient area through injections
- The hair transplant specialist will first design an excellent hairline
- Tiny incisions are made into the recipient area
- Individual grafts will be extracted from the donor area
- Grafts will be placed within the incisions, taking care to follow the exact direction and angle of the original hair so as to achieve natural results
The procedure will be painless because of local anaesthesia. It takes about 6 to 8 hours for completion.
Apart from a bit of swelling and oedema, the patient may not come across any side effects. These can be controlled through medication. Also the patient would be given a course of antibiotics to prevent any infections.
The first week after the hair transplantation is crucial. The patient will have to be very careful. Head bath should not be taken for about 5 days or so. Heavy exercises will have to be avoided for about a week or two.
“Fresh hair will start sprouting from the newly transplanted hair follicles in about 3 months of time,” says Dr. Renu. “The hair growth will be continuous thereafter and the patient should be able to see the complete results of the procedure in about 6 to 12 months.”
